Some cool weather plants to get started…

March 8, 2015

Our first round of seeds sprouted & we prepped the 4×4 bed off the patio for lettuces & strawberries.  S put up the small fence to keep our dogs out & we covered everything with bird netting to keep the cats out.  During prep, we discovered that the cats apparently enjoyed the bed as their outdoor litterbox.  YUCK.  No worries, we’re obviously going to thoroughly wash everything we harvest LOL.

She thought we should try straw bale gardening outside the kitchen window (where we did our winter garden the winter before last) so we got the straw bales, prepped the area and made sure to install drainage.

It takes a couple weeks to prep the bales so they will sustain plants in lieu of soil.  Learn more about straw bale gardening here: Learn About Straw Bale Gardens

We started prep with Miracle Grow fertilizer, since they need a high nitrogen fertilizer & that is what we had on hand.
